My bank (HSBC) has responded through the court to say they will defend all the claim. Is this usually the case or is it exceptional?

HSBC do tend to take this stance, but I think I'm right in saying that they havn't actually defended. Stick to the procedures in CAG, and you'll likely get a settlement before court stage.
